Week With Wickedness. [www'11]

Of we went to Hambantota. Six hours ride each way. An hour or two to get to some where from the hotel. What an exhausting trip. Our aim for this WWW was to:
  • Explore or learning outside classes (Visiting the new harbour in Hambantota funded by China, Whole day Safari at Yala) Engaged with issues of global importance
  • Provide community and service to a primary school (Painting, renewing most of the play ground in the school) Planned and initiated activities
  • Open up the views of other local area in Sri Lanka (Interacting with kids, the exchange mini concert at the primary school, travelling along two sides of rural Sri Lanka) Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
  • Learn how to live in different community in different place (Living with a whole bunch of people for 5 days)Worked collaboratively with others

There were two major words that we had settled to make this all work
  Community & Consideration

After 5 days of WWW'11, we've achieved all of the goals we had set earlier. The whole grade 11 of Overseas School managed to learn, explore, provide, give and take all the experiences throughout this trip. Even though, this is the last Week Without Wall, we made it memorable and gladly enjoyed all the hard work and every sweat we put down.

OSC class of 2012 Week Without Walls.

On the 27th of November, the community and service group DAWG (Dog Awareness Welfare Group) has organized a Dog and Cat sterilization and vaccination for the community around the Battaramula area.(Planned and initiated activities, Engaged with issues of global importance) The sterilization was taken place at one of the government building besides the Battaramula main road. We started off from 8 am till 2 pm. We had vets and trainees which we have hired and the other community for stray dos, 'Dogstar' coming to give us a hand. All the money that we have raised from the previous events, the movie night, the bake sale during the primary production. As the result there were about 50 dogs and cat assigned for the sterilizations and vaccinations throughout the day.
We are very pleased this year because we have reached our goal early. Since usually we will organize the event during the second semester of the school year.
Our next goal is to continue collecting money by doing find raising during the second semester aiming for the next year sterilization.

Football Update. Action continues !

24 Days till SAISA..

The girls SAISA soccer team of OSC has been working hard on practises. We run, sprint, jogging, kicking and even rolling on the ground. We tend to have 4 practises per week.
  • Tuesday 2:50- 5:00 pm
  • Wednesday 6:00- 7:00 am
  • Friday 2:50-  5:00 pm
  • Saturday 10:00-12:00 am
After last week, we decided to cut down people in the team, luckily.. 20 from 24. Which makes sense, because the SAISA tournament will be held here in Colombo.
We have choosen our captians for the team, apparently I was also one of the nomination.
The First captian is Saba Rawald
The Vice captian is Ayla Yurtaslan
I've achieved my goal in football. I'm possitioned as a central mid-fielder together with Saba Rewald. I have had sessions with Chrisni Mendis for goalie training although, not so much anymore because we have a special coach who volunteered to help her, Ms. Nelly. I also realized how my body is somehow getting into shape. Since, I'm no longer get 'dead tired' in the middle of the game and able to play throughout the whole match.
I've finally learned how to make a 'step over'! My next goal for this is to able to apply that technique into a real game situation!

แบดมินตัน (Badminton) Actions and Service

Terunaga Temura and I decided to create a BADMINTON After School Activity(ASA) group for students to participate on every Monday at 2:45 till 3:45. Mr. De Silva has volunteered to supervise and to participate with the group. The purpose of the ASA is to have fun and learn about techniques at the same time.
Terunaga and I have been playing badminton for many years and decided to create a proper group with students in the OSC community of grade 9-12 to join. This could also be an oppotunity for us to practice the basic skills with people who are learning and develop numbers of OSC students into the school team for SAISA Badminton which will be held at OSC in February 2011.

My personal goal to achieve during this quarter for Badminton ASA group is:
  • To build up my basic skills that I have forgotten (I stopped playing badminton for 2 years after recieving the 3rd rank in Thailand)
  • Able to help one of the player in the group in order to get into the school badminton team in the future.
  • Get in shape for football (and other sports participating in the future)
  • Have Fun (:

Gecko A~Wsh!

Girl Football Season has started! I'm very excited to play, become the part of our girl football team and win the tournament which will be held here at OSC. There were a lot of people trying out for the team during the first few practises, which was a good thing to see. However, some people started to drop off because it was too much for them but some tried even harder. Since the team lost its wings and a goalie, we would need good replacements which I could already see who would be able to stand at the spots. Chrisni Mendis (Basketball star) will play as our goalie this year. She is new and still need a guidance to help her with reading the game. So, I decided to offer her a hand to be a trainer. Since my sister was a goalie for the team last year, I had to work with her one by one and trained constantly, I think I would be able to work with Chrisni too. Reading the game is one of the most important thing for the 'last man' and a goalie to play football. Again, I was the 'last man' for the team last year, so I have the skill of reading the game and able to see the direction where the ball is going towards. These are the skills that Chrisni needs to be used to. I am here to help!

Goal for the season
- Last two years ago when I was in grade 9, I was a striker for the team, although it did not work quite well because I was very small and lacked of game experiences. However, last year, I was the 'last man' who protects the goalie and the goal. I can proudly say to myself that I tried my best and we came 3rd place! This proved that I'm able to intercept the ball and screaming outstandingly. (Laughing) However, this year, I would like to try something new, something more challenging. Mid field player. My goal is to become a mid field player. It would costs me a lot of training to get my body fit and able to run the whole game, back and forth. Mid field's job is to support the forwards and the defenders depending on the ball's direction. It is going to be a hard job, but this would be the major goal of the season.
- I'm already assigned to help Chrisni train her goalie skill. I've planned out different steps of training for her.
  • Catching, Grabbing, Throwing, Kicks and Passes
  • Reflexs and Agility
  • Body Pushing
  • Commitment hands and body
  • Corner Balls
  • Trapping the striker
  • Read the Ball and Game
At the end of the season, she would be able to read the game and receive a hard kick such corner kick during real matches.
- Learn new skills in football and adapt it into a real game situation.
- To keep fit and don't get tired half way through the game, in order to do so, I need to train constantly and drink a lot of water.

Most Important: Have A blast with the season!

バレーボール (Volleyball) Action!

Two months of Volleyball was pretty amusing, our skills were developed and our passion raised.
Never thought that Volleyball would become one of the my favourite sport, but it did. It was pretty interested in it and thought that I might be able to do better and develop my skill even more to able to compete with a higher level athletics.
During practises provided by Mr. B, I have found my strengths and my weakness with in this sport. My strengths are serving, spiking and diving down on the floor. However, I noticed that I've got these skills throughout my previous badminton skill that I used to be good at. Although, diving down on the floor or do everything to keep the ball alive was all about the commitment given. I've also got many weaknesses which was developed but not to the satisfying point. Setting. Setting seemed to be the hardest part in the game for me. The setter will be the second person who plays the after the ball hit over to the side. It was really complicated being setter, especially trying to fix bad passes and still functioning on the propositions.
Timing is one of the most important thing in order to become a good volleyball player. Timing to serve, block, receive, pass and spike.  Without the right timing, the power wouldn't be transfer to the ball, therefore, it becomes a bad hit.
Communications is also important in the games, without it, the team would not be able to work together because understandings don't come by staring at each other.

End of Volleyball Season.
                                                             Cheers. Gooo... GECKO!!!   (:
