Finished up the Action bit!

29 March 2012

We travelled to Dhaka, Bangladesh to join the football tournament in SAISA in March 2012. After all the hard work I have put in in terms of developing new agility, strategy, taking the leadership role, we managed to fight our way through the final against the host team. It was not the first time we had entered the final and this was the opportunity for our team to become a champion. A long the way, there were a lot of planning and initiative works with the team mates. We must work collaboratively with each other since it is a team sport. The fight was tough and exciting. I could see all the perseverance and commitment that each player, including myself, had put in that game. However, the game was brought down to the penalties. I became the goal keeper for our team. Adrenaline was rushing through our veins. However, we did not have enough luck and lost our championship penalties by one point. It was disappointing but it really was one of the way to finish up my SAISA competition. I have learned so much throughout this activity. I met new people and made friends with them. It was truly an experience.

Creativity: Hope for Kids Fashion show

14/02/2012

Last Saturday, the 12th of February 2012, the Hope for Kids Service group held a charity fashion show at the Overseas School of Colombo. The Objective of the fashion show is to raise the donation and raise awareness of issues of global importance amongst the Overseas commnity about children who lives in the rural part of the country. The money will go to the development of the hospital the service has opened several months ago.

I was asked to become one of the models for the fashion show. The show required several chroreographed movements which we needed to learn, taught by Jackie Mei. This meant i had to show perseverance and commitment in the activities. I had to plan, initiate and worked collaboratively with the other models. Throghout the practices, I have managed to develope new skill of 'catwalking'. We learned many techniques of posing, walking and timing. It was quite interesting and amusing. I had a hard time walking in high heels however, after several hours of practice, i became better at it.

I was modelling for several designers: Avinash, DMO, Darshy, Aruvate, Arugambay and others. I was honored to start off the show and ended with the beautiful red dress. It was truely an experience despite some comments and considerations on the ethical implications that some acts or outfits were inappropriate. However, i realized that they have a point, but we all have human rights, the freedom or speech. It was also for community and service. We are here to raise awareness to the audience not recieving thier judgements.. But, it is always useful to learn for the mistakes.

Here are some photos from the fashion show!

Service at RICD

11/02/2012

This holiday, i had a chance to volunteer at the Rachanacarin Institute Child Development in the Drama Therapy program. The drama therapy has an objective to use drama technique as a way of learning in communication, critical thinking and applying it in to real life situations. Every year, the hospital holds the training sessions for the final performance at the end of the course. Individuals who participates in the program are mostly handicapped, mentally and physically. The trainers are volunteered from Minnesota, USA.

I became one of the staff at the program. We started off the program with 6 hours none-stop planning and initiating the activities with the board of the hospital, the minister and other important people who are involved in the program. It is very important for the program to have a lot of support in order to achieve its goal, therefore we must work collaboratively with others and consider the ethical implications of our actions.

The first day at work was exciting. I started learning the student's name, both verbally and physically (hand sign language). It was quite amazing how gentle and talented these people are. Throughout the beginning period, I had showed my perseverance and commitment in the activities by getting to know each of every students about the background of their lives. By doing this, I had learned a lot of things especially when observing something with another point of view. These people see the world differently because they have less freedom. I have come to realize that this is also a problem with the society and how we forget what is left behind us. It is important to get engage with issues of global importance like this one. I also developed new skill in terms of hospitality, especially with people with special needs.

We began teaching easy movements, dramatic movements to the students. I was truly grateful that I attended the drama class 2 years ago. I truly enjoy what i was involved with then. The teachers from Minnesota were so inspiring and the students were so eager to learn and become an actor.
It was sad when i had to leave. Students and staff threw a farewell party for me. The last thing i did for them in return was, I translated a song, 'what a wonderful world' into Thai and sang it to everybody in the room. It was truly an experience.

DAWG Sterilization

Date: 2/02/2012

The Dog Awareness Welfare Group held the Dogs and Cats sterilization and vaccination on the 28th of January 2012. To be honest, it was truely worth it. All the hard work and commitment i had put to make it all happen. There were a lot of turn ups. We opened the sterilization from 8 am to 2 pm. In total we managed to sterilize 40 animals and vaccinate 72 of them! The vets, the teachers and students body had been running around none stop to provide the best service to the community. There was a bit of problems at some point such as we forgot to hand out some information. However, it worked out fine. I was truely glad that i had attended a lot of previous sterilization which gave me the knowledge of what we should do and how we should organize it.
Through out the day, it was very busy and there were people coming in to help and donate some vaccinations. Such as Ms. Ashani for the Embark company. She helped us in term of spreading the word and donating 20 vaccinations to our campaign. We really appreciate it.
We have come to realize that there are many people out there who maintain the same objective and we must work together to make it all better. I had documented all the actions that was taking place. There are some photos on the bottom.
What i had learned from planning, initiating activities and worked collaboratively with others to organize the sterilization was indescribable. I learned and developed new skills to be a leader, to be a giver, to be a thinker and a responsible individual. Not only that I showed perseverance and commitment in the local community but i also helped all the DAWG new member to see what it is like to be in a sterilization, with the hope that they will pass on this to be engaged with issues of global importance.

Objective Last Semester

"This will be the last CAS Objectives for my IB course.  However, of course, the only limit is CAS belongs to the IB but the 'creativity', 'action' and 'service' would always follow me wherever I go in the future."
For this semester, i will be focusing on the sum up of the activities and services.

Service: The Sterilization for DAWG project. I will be approaching directly engaged with issues of global importance. Stephanie and I decided that we will be holding the sterilization and vaccination on January the 28th. To prepare for the day, there are many things which has to be Plan, initiate and organize in order to make it through. I had to worked collaboratively with others. From preparing the vets, collecting items, publicizing, collecting assistances to communicating with the government in the area to help us for the sterilization, organizing is definitely not an easy job. By doing most of these things, I realize now that holding a leadership role in a DAWG programme is not an easy job. It is no longer about spreading awareness about rabies and racing funds to hold the sterilization; it is a lot more than that on the background. I could reflect that I showed perseverance and commitment in the activities from giving much time into making this sterilization happen.
A little bit about the sterilization campaign we are holding this year- The date is on the 28th of January 2012 at the government building, Battaramulla, Colombo, Sri Lanka. The operations begin at 8 am to 2 pm. There will be 'none payment' sterilization and vaccination available throughout the day. The operations are done by vets from Kandy, Sri Lanka. All costs will be covered by the DAWG campaign. We had raised about 60,000 rs. in total.

Action: SAISA Girl's Football. I'm looking forward to become a captain of the team this year. The reasons are 1. Football is my passion and when i'm passionate about something, i often put my heart into it. 2. This is my 4th and the last year of SAISA footbal. 3. Leadership role would give me a little award and push me to strive to my best ability. 4. It is my personality to show perseverance and commitment in terms of giving advices and pushing people when they need one. 5.) on  I always wanted to be a captain anyway :D However, it is a possibility that i will not be travelling due to financial issues and academic issues that i should be focusing more on at the moment.
This year, I am hoping that the team will strengthen the basic skill more than last year and Developed new personal skills. This includes basic dribbling, passing, shooting, defensive play etc.

Creativity: Oscars and other school event crew. I am in the SGA team this year, again, and hoping that we could improve the school events that are happing in the future. There are a lot of members in the SGA team, so it would be more convenien to Planned and initiated activities and work collaboratively with others. The goal is to help out as much as possible and showing to the new members of the team for a futher reference.
There will more informations on the next SGA posts

Ending of Basketball SEASON

"We're are the champion my friend.. Ta ta tahhh.. We keeping on fighting till the end...ta ta tahh.. " So, that was the song we were singing on the way to the airport after recieving the first place trophy from the SAISA Girl's Basketball of 2012.

Throughout the tournament, we had worked our hearts out to compete with the other competitors. It was not easy, playing each games. In fact, we had to play 2 games per day, 3 days in a row. Our legs were sore, our knees were bleeding. But, that did not stop the perseverance and commitment that every players on the team put into each game.

Most of my jobs in the team was to be the first up front defender. It was not easy, really. I got fouled out once in the tournament, which is an iprovement from last year. (where i fouled out every single game) It backs up the point that I have developed the skills. Other than being a defender, I was also a right wing in the offensive. In order to be a good offensive player, I had planned and initiated strategy with the others teammates and worked collaboratively with them in the game. It hadn't been so easy for me, because i accidently jammed my most important finger during the third game. It swelled up like a sausage. But, with all the commitments that i put for the team and the tournament, i decided to play on no matter what. And We Won! Undefeated!

I think i have achieve most of the goals i have set earlier in the beginning of the season. Although, we still don't know who the co captain was. But, does it matter?

Next season, FOOTBALL, Dhaka! Here I come.

Its all about ACTION in Volleyball

Volleyball season was truly a challenging excitement. We trained hard throughout two months time and arrived at the second place in the tournament. There were many things I have learned and developed from participating in the team. First of all, being a leader requires more than just a badge that says ‘captain’. It requires all the patience, perseverance and commitment, all time involvement and strength to be able to lead the team forward. Leader has to work collaboratively with others. If the leader falls, the whole team will fall. Second thing, I have developed new volleyball skills, agility-wise. I was able to control the ball and knew my positions on the court better than in the past.
It is a shame that this is my last year in the volleyball team at OSC. However, there is a possibility that I might be able to carry this skill and adapt to another sport such as basketball for the next season.
